Cognitive and Neurological Rehabilitation for Injured Workers

A work-related brain injury can affect far more than an employee’s ability to return to a job site. Concussion, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and other neurological conditions can affect attention, memory, processing speed, balance, reaction time, executive function, cognitive endurance, and the ability to safely manage normal workplace demands. Focus Brain Therapy provides evaluation-led cognitive and neurological rehabilitation for appropriate workers’ compensation cases. Our goal is to help identify functional challenges, provide individualized rehabilitation, document relevant progress, and support coordinated planning between the injured worker and the professionals involved in the case.

A More Complete View of the Injured Worker

Some neurological injuries are immediately apparent. Others are much harder to see. An injured worker may communicate normally during a short appointment yet struggle when expected to concentrate for several hours, manage multiple tasks, work on a computer, respond quickly, drive, tolerate a busy environment, or make decisions under pressure. These functional demands matter. Focus Brain Therapy evaluates cognitive and neurological performance in the context of what the individual is actually trying to return to.

Evaluation Areas

  • * Attention and concentration
  • * Memory
  • * Processing speed
  • * Executive function
  • * Reaction time
  • * Balance

Functional Metrics

  • * Coordination
  • * Visual processing
  • * Dual-task performance
  • * Cognitive endurance
  • * Ability to tolerate demand

The purpose is to establish a clearer understanding of current function and help guide an appropriate rehabilitation plan.

Who May Be Referred?

Workers’ compensation referrals may be considered for individuals experiencing persistent cognitive or neurological difficulties following an accepted or suspected work-related condition when appropriate authorization and clinical criteria are satisfied.

Common Conditions

  • * Concussion & Mild TBI
  • * Significant Traumatic Brain Injury
  • * Stroke or Neurological Events
  • * Persistent Cognitive Symptoms
  • * Other Neurological Conditions

Every case should be reviewed individually. Diagnosis alone does not determine program eligibility. Medical stability, cognitive status, physical capabilities, safety, functional goals, and authorization requirements all influence appropriateness.

The Referral Process

Authorized Referrers

  • * Treating physicians
  • * Case managers
  • * Claims professionals
  • * Insurance carriers
  • * Employers & Attorneys

Once a referral is received, Focus Brain Therapy can review available clinical information and determine what additional documentation may be required before evaluation or treatment can begin.

* Medical records
* Physician orders
* Claim information
* Work status

Authorization and Coverage

Workers’ compensation benefits and authorization requirements vary by claim, carrier, jurisdiction, diagnosis, and requested service. Coverage should be confirmed on a case-by-case basis.

Speak With Our Team

Beginning With Evaluation

Attention & Memory

Sustaining concentration and retaining new information for functional use.

Processing & Executive

Efficiency in interpretation and the ability to plan, organize, and adapt.

Physical Integration

Reaction time, balance, coordination, and visual processing efficiency.

Cognitive Rehabilitation

For workers experiencing persistent cognitive limitations, rehabilitation focuses on functional abilities. The broader goal is to progressively challenge the abilities required for everyday functioning and occupational activity.

Cognitive Circuit Training®

Our proprietary multisensory approach combines cognitive exercises with movement, balance, and reaction-time tasks. This is particularly relevant when an injured worker performs adequately during simple activities but struggles as several demands are combined.

Intensive Rehabilitation When Appropriate

A more concentrated schedule may be considered when the patient is medically appropriate, functional goals support it, and authorization is obtained. This is not appropriate for every patient.

Documenting Progress

We document initial findings, functional limitations, goals, and observed response to rehabilitation. Documentation reflects actual evaluation and does not overstate progress.

Communication

With appropriate authorization, we communicate evaluation status, attendance, and functional response to case managers and claims professionals.

Supporting Return-to-Work Planning

Functional Challenges

  • * Sustained concentration & Multitasking
  • * Computer use & Decision-making
  • * Cognitive fatigue & Environmental stimulation

Graduated Return Process

Staged returns may include reduced hours, task modifications, or gradual increases in responsibility. Focus Brain Therapy provides functional information to contribute to these discussions.

Working With the Treating Physician

The treating physician remains responsible for medical diagnosis, work restrictions, and formal clearance. We provide functional data to assist these professionals.

For Injured Workers

Neurological injury can be frustrating because difficulties aren't always obvious. We help document how you are functioning today.

For Case Managers

We serve as a specialized resource for functional evaluation, individualized rehab, and coordinated communication.

For Physicians

We contribute additional information about functional performance while providing rehab within the authorized care plan.

Clear Roles Support Better Coordination

Focus Brain Therapy’s role is clinical. We do not independently determine claim compensability, legal disability status, or final insurance coverage decisions.

Start the Referral Process

If you are an authorized professional seeking rehabilitation for an injured worker, we can review the referral and determine the next step.

Workers’ compensation laws, coverage, and processes vary by jurisdiction and case. Referral does not guarantee authorization or specific outcomes. Formal determinations regarding disability and work status remain the responsibility of authorized medical and legal professionals.
